Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
