Our Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Top Place.

Initially, this work could seem closer to an arduous university examination rather than a new pop record from an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Broken across four distinct movements and performed in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged album exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, carried by the lush presence of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within an extensive list of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the work of other artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking is almost miraculous, and complete praise going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to fuse the past and modern styles, the ambitions are far greater here, and the balancing act far more precarious. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, is an essential spirit of joy. Much like the legendary artist at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart apart, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth clearly during a stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string surge thuds in with cartoonish force. The song immediately segues to the wild track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—nor wish to know—what it will go next."

Nearly each track concludes at a totally different place from where it began. One moment explores the transient nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing into digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work begins out moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album involves navigating the line between radical innovation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in English builds around a chorus that feels to collect more and more infectious melodies while it spins upward. That feat is echoed by another powerful ballad that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast where the guests at the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly inventive visionary.
